Rate Transparency- Be a Part of It
This summer, I was talking to a business coach about how to handle the summer drought of work, and I said, “it seems that if I’m like a squirrel, and I put aside some money during the busier times, the slower times won’t hurt so much.”
This brought up the question of my rates. I have been in business since 1997. I have always had market rate freelance rates, and when I’ve been the producer for a project, I use those same rates for the different elements of the project (e.g. one rate for videography, another rate for editing, yet another rate for scriptwriting- I can do all three, if needed). She said this seemed very confusing- perhaps I should just come up with one (higher) rate that I use on the script-to-screen jobs. I’m considering it.
In the meantime, I ran across a site that has a rate database for a ton of freelance roles….as well as a directory and job board! Although the website is aimed towards women, I am guessing there’s more than one dude that reads this that also is asking himself if he charges the right amount. Keep in mind when you see the rates that the lower rates are likely rates for folks who are more entry level, or less experienced, and the higher rates are on the other end of experience. The database reflects hourly rates, so you can multiply that out to see how it matches up with your full day rate.
And I’m transparent about my rates, too, so if you have a producer that might be looking for a teleprompter operator, camera operator, etc., please point them to the freelance page of my website where I can be booked directly.
